Structural Steel Fire Protection UK

GRJ Contracting offers a range of structural steel fire protection and fire barrier options to protect your building’s structural steel if a fire occurs. When steel is heated to above 550°C, it loses its stability and capacity to bear loads, becoming dangerous and often life-threatening. The steel will then begin to lose strength and bend, ultimately leading to a structural collapse and highlighting the lifesaving need for fire protection for structural steel. Be it fireproof insulation, intumescent coatings or fire compartmentation options, GRJ Contracting can find the right protection for you.

We provide and apply a range of intumescent coating and boarded solutions specifically designed for fireproofing steel beams for your building frameworks. The reactive properties of such systems protect the steel from high temperatures generated during a fully developed fire. They are designed to provide structural integrity and fire protection of steel, subsequently complying with modern building design regulations.
GRJ Contracting can offer a FREE evaluation to assess your building and advise on the next steps to steelwork fire protection solutions.

FAQS

What fire protection does steel need?

Structural steel fire protection requirements can vary based on the height or purpose of a building. The legal standards for different types of buildings are outlined in Fire safety: Approved Document B, which is the main set of regulations regarding passive fire protection, and BS 9999 set by the British Standards Institution for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings. While these regulations don’t directly mention structural steel, they are used as a guide for contractors, managers and site teams to help them decide on the best solution for structural steel fire protection.

How can steel be protected from fire?

One of the most effective and commonly-used ways to protect steel from fire is intumescent paint. This special type of steel paint swells up when exposed to heat, forming a protective layer around the steel beams.
The other way to protect structural steel beams from fire is by using fire protective mineral boards to create a casing around the steel. GRJ Contracting can help determine which option is better for your building and install structural steel fire protection.

Does all steel need to be fire protected?

To meet the requirements for structural stability outlined in the Building regulations and comply with Fire Safety Standards, multi-storey steel-framed structures will usually need to have sufficient fire protection. This is done to help prevent the building from collapsing in the event of a fire.
