Client Overview
Integrated Health Projects (IHP) is an established joint venture between VINCI Construction UK Limited and Sir Robert McAlpine Limited, specialising in the delivery of major healthcare infrastructure across the UK.
Project Challenges
The National Rehabilitation Centre is a first-of-its-kind for the NHS, being a carbon-neutral, all-electric facility with ASHP and Solar Panels. For GRJ, this meant a vast amount of non-standard, complex penetrations.
This pioneering design created a highly complex MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) infrastructure, presenting significant challenges for passive fire protection installation:
Non-standard penetration types -
The carbon-neutral, all-electric design introduced a high volume of complex, non-standard service penetrations requiring bespoke fire-stopping solutions
M&E Interface -
GRJ worked alongside multiple mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades to methodically install high-density passive fire protection across a complex network of service penetrations
Scale and programme pressure -
With around 7,500 fire-stopping seals across three levels plus a dedicated Utility Hub, maintaining quality and programme compliance simultaneously was a core challenge
Our Approach
GRJ prioritised early engagement with IHP and the wider site team to ensure all passive fire protection requirements were fully understood before works commenced.
Key elements of our approach included:
Dedicated management resource assigned to the project throughout, overseeing coordination and delivery
Collaborative, ongoing communication with IHP and MEP trades to ensure efficient sequencing
A quality-first approach to every installation, ensuring all manufactured and tested details were adhered to at all times
Proactive issue resolution to keep pace with the busy construction programme
Scope of Passive Fire Protection Works
Fire stopping across 3 levels of the National Rehabilitation Centre, plus a Utility Hub, around 7,500 seals in total
Intumescent paint structural steel protection
Large cavity barriers installation
Small cavity barriers installation
Key Outcomes
Over 7,500 passive fire protection seals installed to a high specification finish
Zero accidents recorded across the full project duration
All works delivered in compliance with programme requirements
Successful collaboration across a complex, multi-trade environment
Strong client relationship built, with GRJ recommended for future NHS and healthcare projects
