What is Fire Boarding? 

Fire boarding is the installation of specially engineered fire-resistant panels fixed to walls, ceilings and structural elements throughout a building. These panels are designed to contain fire within a defined space, preventing it from breaching into adjacent areas and compromising the rest of the structure. 

How Does Fire Boarding Work? 

Fire-resistant board works by creating a physical barrier that resists the spread of flame, heat and smoke. The panels are tested and rated to withstand fire for a defined period, typically between 30 and 120+ minutes, depending on the product and application. During which the structural integrity of the building is maintained, giving occupants and emergency services adequate time to respond.

Common Types of Fire Board 

1. Fire-Rated Plasterboard (Gypsum-Based) 

Fire-rated plasterboard is a specialised, dense dry lining reinforced with glass fibres and additives for enhanced fire protection. When heated, it releases chemically combined water, which slows the transfer of heat and delays the spread of fire, offering between 30 and 120 minutes of protection. It is widely used in partitions, ceilings and steel frame enclosures. 

2. Calcium Silicate Boards 

Made from calcium silicate, cement and fibre, calcium silicate boards are a high-performance, non-combustible and lightweight option for fire protection. They carry an A1 fire rating and are equally well regarded for their moisture resistance and long-term durability, making them a reliable choice where longevity is a priority. They can provide fire resistance for up to 4 hours. 

3. Fibre Cement Boards 

Fibre cement board is composed of sand, cement and cellulose fibres, producing an A1-rated, non-combustible panel suitable for both interior and exterior use. It is commonly specified for cladding, exterior siding and tile backing. It offers the added benefit of moisture and termite resistance alongside its fire protection credentials. 

4. Magnesium Oxide Boards (MGO) 

Fibre cement board is composed of sand, cement and cellulose fibres, producing an A1-rated, non-combustible panel suitable for both interior and exterior use. It is commonly specified for cladding, exterior siding and tile backing. It offers the added benefit of moisture and termite resistance alongside its fire protection credentials. 

5. Specialised Fire Board 

Specialist fire boards are purpose-engineered for the most demanding fire protection requirements, going beyond the standard performance of general fire-resistant panels. They are typically specified for structural steel protection, high-risk compartmentation and complex commercial or industrial projects where standard boards cannot meet the required fire resistance ratings. Protection periods range from 30 to 120+ minutes, depending on the product and specification.

1. Structural Protection 

Fire boarding encases key structural components such as beams, columns and frames with fire-rated panels, preventing them from absorbing heat and losing structural capacity. This ensures the building remains stable long enough for occupants to evacuate and emergency services to operate safely.

Fire-resistant board is used to line walls and party walls, creating clearly defined fire compartments that stop fire spreading between rooms or dwellings. In the UK and Europe, fire resistance is measured using a standardised classification system under EN 13501, which rates a product or system across three key criteria. 
 
Load-bearing capacity (R) refers to the ability of a structural element to maintain its stability and continue bearing its load during a fire. 
 
Integrity (E) measures whether a system can prevent the passage of flames and hot gases through to the unexposed side. 
 
Insulation (I) assesses how effectively a system limits heat transfer, ensuring the unexposed side does not reach temperatures that could ignite surrounding materials. 
 
These criteria combine to produce a time-based rating, typically expressed in minutes (30, 60, 90 or 120), indicating how long a system can maintain its performance under fire conditions. The higher the rating, the greater the level of protection and the more demanding the specification required.

Fire boarding offers practical benefits beyond fire protection alone. The dense composition of fire-resistant panels makes them effective at reducing noise transfer between rooms, floors and adjoining properties. They are a valuable consideration in residential developments, hotels and any building where acoustic separation is a requirement. 
 
From a thermal perspective, fire boards contribute to the overall insulation performance of a building by limiting heat transfer between compartments. This can support energy efficiency and help maintain stable temperatures across different areas of a building, which is particularly relevant in commercial and industrial settings. 

Fire Boarding Installation Considerations 

Surface Preparation & Fixing Methods 

Before any fire boarding is installed, surfaces must be clean, dry and structurally sound. Any loose material, contamination or unevenness should be addressed beforehand. These can affect how securely the boards fix and how well the overall system performs. 
 
Fixing methods vary depending on the board type and the substrate it is being applied to. Screw patterns, spacing and depth must follow manufacturer guidelines precisely, as deviating from the specified method can invalidate the system's fire rating. 
 
Jointing and taping between boards is equally important, gaps and poorly finished joints are one of the most common weak points in fire boarding installations and can significantly undermine the integrity of a compartment. 

Compliance & Certification 

Fire boarding products should carry recognised third-party accreditation such as UKCA marking or BBA certification, confirming they have been independently tested and meet the required performance standards. Specified products should also carry the appropriate EN 13501 classification to ensure compliance with UK Building Regulations Part B. 
 
It is important to understand the distinction between product certification and system certification. A certified board installed incorrectly does not constitute a certified system. Installation should be carried out by qualified and competent operatives, and on completion, the system should be formally documented and signed off as part of the building's passive fire protection record. 
 
Passive fire protection is only as effective as its weakest point. A single unsealed penetration or poorly fixed board can compromise an entire fire compartment, which is why the quality of installation is just as important as the quality of the product itself. 

How Does Fire Boarding Differ From Other Fire Compartmentation Methods? 

Fireproof board acts as a protective non-combustible encasement or lightweight dry-installed partitioning system, rather than relying on heavy masonry or liquid-based coatings. As a passive system, it requires no activation, power source or ongoing maintenance, setting it apart from active solutions such as sprinklers. 
 
Unlike point-of-use products such as intumescent strips or fire-stopping collars, fire boarding provides continuous protection across large surface areas and structural elements. Fire doors and glazing serve a similar compartmentation purpose, but are limited to openings, fire boarding addresses the broader fabric of the structure. 
 
It is not a replacement for these other methods. An effective passive fire protection strategy combines fire boarding with fire doors, intumescent products, and fire-stopping solutions, each playing a distinct role within a compliant system.
